- The FAA's Pilot Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge(FAA-H-8083-24C)
should bear a big friendly sticker saying "Start Here!" It's intent is to be a guidebook to and encyclopedia of the
information you need to know to pursue a pilot's license. In an complex endeavor like aviation, no single reference
can truly cover it all, but the PHAK's 500+ pages and 72mb of text and illustrations make a credible effort
and point the way to additional references for when you need more. You can find the
full PDF
or individual chapters on the FAA Handbooks & Manuals Site
or download it from our server.
- The Airman's Information Manual(AIM)
is an indispensable reference for aviation technical information such as pattern entries,
aeronautical lighting, medical facts, flight plans, abbreviations, acronyms, the pilot controller glossary
and much more. It's also avaialbe as a pdf on the
FAA Air Traffic Publications site. It's updated
frequently so be sure to stay up to date if you download it.
- The Federal Aviation Regulations(FARs) are the laws governing all aspects of aviation United States.
For the current regulations, the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) website
refers us to the US Code of Federal Regulations(CFR) managed by the National Archives, where Title 14 refers to
Aeronautics and Space, and Chapter I of Title 14 covers the FAA under the
Department of Transportation. Title 14, Chapter I, contains subchapters A through N, each with a number of parts. For an aspiring pilot, familiarity
with the relevant parts of
Subchapter D Part 61 - Certification: Pilots, Flight Instructors and Ground
Instructors as well as Subchapter F Part 91 - General Operating and Flight Rules
is required. Other parts could also be of interest later, such as Part 141:Pilot Schools, Parts 121 and 135 for airline and air taxi operations respectively, as well as
parts 23, and 43 governing airworthiness and maintenance. Downloadable pdf format versions
are available through the Published Edition button on the left side of the CFR page and are linked here for
Part 91 and
Part 61.
